ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Garden Horse seeks to evaluate potential ideas about the state of mind of the first man, Adam, at the moment of our fall. The horse serves as a stand in, enabling us to explore concepts around this well known figure with fresh eyes: loose, abstract and unrestricted by the literal.

The hair is of particular importance, serving as a visual extension of his state of mind. It is neatly braided and in order, suggesting calculation and control. I believe the fruit itself was not a bad thing but that the sin was to act in rebellion, doing what Adam knew God had told him not to do. Adam had heard the command not to eat of the tree of knowledge directly from God. He willfully disobeyed, while Eve was deceived. This is why Christ died for the sin of one man.
