ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This portrait is loosely based on the photographs of Ashishishe, Curly, a Crow scout for Custer, allied with the American army to fight their mutual enemy the Sioux.

I was drawn to his portraits for the intense, purposeful gaze he possessed. We can get some sense of the struggle and resolve of people living in turbulent times through portraits like his. I think my version betrays somewhat of a vulnerability or sadness that I am only imaging in him but I’ll admit it is more probably an imposing of myself upon the subject. Either way I like to imagine what these historic figures must have experience and felt like.

Thomas Leforge, in Memoirs of a White Crow Indian, 1928 edition, p. 250, said of him “I knew him from his early boyhood until his death in early old age. He was a good boy, an unassuming and quiet young man, a reliable scout, and at all times of his life he was held in high regard by his people.”

One anecdote on the creation of this piece that seems serendipitous to me: once again I chose to do a portrait of someone I knew nothing about and only after finishing the work did I look for any of the history on this individual and found that he is of the Crow tribe, making the stylized crow in the background more meaningful.
